DACA students and other immigrants need to be aware of their legal options

Now is a time of extreme uncertainty for immigrants throughout the United States. Even "dreamers" - students protected by DACA - are fearful.

Recently, President Trump tried to tell dreamers that he does not plan to deport them, but a new lawsuit claims that one dreamer has already been deported.

The risk is even higher for immigrants who are not eligible for DACA.

Under the Obama administration, there was more emphasis on keeping families together and deporting only immigrants who had been arrested for serious crimes. Now ICE is casting a wider net.

The reality is that immigrants can be deported for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Overstaying a visa
  • Being arrested on criminal charges
  • Violating visa restrictions by working without authorization

If you or a loved one is facing removal proceedings in Mississippi, do not wait to get counsel from an experienced immigration attorney.

Each immigration case is unique. An experienced lawyer can investigate your case and help you explore every available option for avoiding deportation. Depending on the circumstances, those options may include:

  • Applying for a visa
  • Adjustment to permanent resident status
  • Obtaining a waiver of removability
  • Obtaining an unlawful presence waiver
  • Applying for asylum
  • Cancellation of removal
