Is this the last chance for immigration reform in 2023?

On Behalf of | May 22, 2023 | Blog, Immigration

Immigration reform has been a hot topic throughout 2023. The subject is particularly relevant for people who wish to work in Mississippi. This is because of the slowness with which the government has pursued immigration reforms this year. However, this is about to change, thanks to a new series of far-reaching immigration reforms.

Introducing the national defense authorization act

The National Defense Authorization Act is set to be the last major chance for immigration reform in 2023. The Act is set up to protect Dreamers. These individuals have lived in the U.S. since they were minors but still lack official status. The new reform can give them the jump start they need to finalize their naturalization.

Many of these Dreamers are the dependent children of employment visa holders and green card applicants. They face the prospect of deportation when they grow too old to qualify for dependent visa status. Refugees from Afghanistan can also apply for relief under this new reform if it should succeed in becoming law.

Afghan students receive a major boost

Students from Afghanistan can also look forward to some exciting new developments. The second amendment under the new bill will make it easier for them to receive their visas. The new terms can allow them to do so without having to first prove they don’t plan to leave the U.S. after they finish their studies.

The NDAA is not quite law. The House has recently voted to approve these reforms. This gives them a better chance of streamlining immigration policy in the coming year. The idea is to strengthen the flow of immigrant employees to offset a labor shortage. This will give new hope to Dreamers, students, and employers nationwide.
